During pregnancy, the body produces more fluids to sustain the baby’s development. When the fluid is excess, it builds up in different body parts and could result in swollen feet. This can get quite uncomfortable for you, unfortunately. To deal with the swelling, here are some things you can do.
1. Wear compression stockings
Commonly known as an effective treatment for post-thrombotic syndrome, Veniti explains that compression stockings help improve blood flow in the legs. Ideally, it can be used during pregnancy. These are available at different pressures, ranging from light to strong. Consult with your doctor to know the most suitable ones.
Massaging affected areas will encourage circulation and drive the pooled up fluids away. Massage your legs in motions towards the heart using firm pressure. In addition to cooling you off during the hot weather, swimming also aids in blood circulation and movement of fluids in your body. If you can’t swim, walking or floating in water helps take pressure off the leg joints. These interventions minimize edema and prevent further swelling.
4. Elevate your feet
When resting, place your legs at a position above your heart. If this is not possible, elevate them to a comfortable position — like using pillows while sitting on a couch or lying down. Adopting this position allows the body to recirculate fluids easily and dissipate any swelling in your legs.
5. Apply cold compress
Cold compresses constrict the blood vessels and reduce the flow of blood to the swollen feet. Apply the cold compress for 15 minutes every other hour or when necessary. If you settle for ice packs, always remember to wrap the ice to prevent frostbite.
