Most people will only go to their dentist when their teeth hurt, or they have a good reason to want to look good. This could be a prom, wedding, or class reunion. Some cosmetic and restorative treatments can produce instant results in one visit, but not crowns, veneers, inlays, and outlays. This is where CEREC comes in.
What is it?
CEREC is the acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or Ceramic Reconstruction for short. It is a system makes full use of available computer power to help a dentist design a dental crown, veneer, onlay, or inlay while you wait. The system is not new. The initial development was by a University of Zurich dentist named Dr Werner H. Moermann with the help of Dr Markus Brandistini, an electrical engineer, back in 1985. The CEREC system in wide use today is the sixth version of the original system.
How does it work?
The only difference with the CEREC system and the regular way of doing ceramic restorations except there is no need for an impression or a dental laboratory. Normally, your dentist will make an impression of your teeth and send it to the lab. You will have to wait at least a week before it is ready to fit. With the CEREC system, however, your dentist will make a 3D scan of the teeth that need cosmetic or restoration. The system will then design the restoration shape and feed it into a computerised mill. This will carve a piece of ceramic material into the precise colour and dimensions based on the design. The dentist will do a fitting and trim it until it is a perfect fit before bonding and polishing it.
How long does it take?
The CEREC system itself only takes a few minutes from start to finish, Bromley’s All Smile Dental Care says. Once your dentist determines what you need, and you agree to the treatment, the dentist would still have to prepare the tooth or teeth that need restoration or cosmetic treatment. However, you can have the whole process, including the prep work, done in one visit. This is an obvious advantage to you if you are in a hurry, or it is inconvenient to go back to the dentist.
You do not have to wait several days or weeks to have better-looking teeth. You can get restorative or cosmetic treatments done in one visit with the CEREC system. Ask your dentist about it.
