Encouraging Kids to Fall in Love with Books

Kid Reading a BookThere are many reasons to fall in love with reading. It takes you to places you have never been to. It gives you access to some of the world’s most brilliant minds. You get to learn the past and live it again.

A love for reading, however, does not come naturally. It is laborious and time-consuming, which is why most people, especially kids, shun this avocation.

Family Matters Homebased Learning Environments says falling in love with reading is a process. Here are some things to keep in mind if you want to encourage your kids to pick up a book.

Set an Example

Before you tell your kids that reading is fun, see to it that you enjoy the company of books. Gradually introduce the joy of reading by reading them a story before they sleep. Make it fun by acting the characters.

Make it Fun

Make the activity more fun and interesting by turning it into a game. For one, you can pick a word and ask them how many times it appears in the story. Keep the story alive by asking your kids to continue the story of previously read books.

Vary the Selection

Do not force your kids to read only one type of book. Otherwise, it will become difficult for them to develop a discerning literary taste.  Start with what interests them. If you give them books that do not interest them, you are only giving them reason to dislike reading.

Be Visual

To further make the activity more motivating and exciting, give your kids picture books. Kids are more drawn to shapes and colours, which is why it will be more helpful if you give them books that contain a lot of images.

These are only some of the things to keep in mind when getting your kids to like reading. If they shun the activity, do not force them to go on. Give them some time.
