You know how debilitating this condition – osteoarthritis – can be. It can have an impact on almost all aspects of your life, including the vital sexual function. So it is indeed encouraging to hear that you and millions of other patients may be able to enjoy sexual activity once more after undergoing hip replacement surgery.
According to the study, which was presented during the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, sexual function was improved in at least 90 percent of patients after undergoing hip replacement. So if your condition warrants this procedure, you may also expect an improvement in your sexual life once you decide to have a hip replacement in Kent, says The Wells Suite.
Significant Improvement in Sexual Function
For this study, researchers recruited 147 participants who were all confirmed to be suffering from either hip or knee osteoarthritis and were scheduled to undergo hip or knee replacement surgeries. This group was composed of 68 men and 78 women with an average age of 57.7 years.
At the conclusion of the study, researchers were able to determine that there was an overall improvement in sexual function in 90 percent of the participants. Significant findings include the following:
- Improvement in libido in 42 percent of participants
- Increase in duration of sexual contact in 41 percent of participants
- Increase in sexual frequency in 41 percent of participants
- Improvement in wellbeing in 84 percent of participants
- Increase in sexual self-image in 55 percent of participants
While many may not acknowledge it, sexual life is a significant component in a person’s life and loss of this capacity can have a huge impact. But it should be stressed that the benefits of hip replacement is not only limited to this aspect. It has been proven that regaining function of the hips has allowed patients to be free from pain and discomfort, allowing them to perform normal daily activities.
